Sobeys and Safeway: No Published Seniors Day

This entry exists to give you a straight answer about two of the biggest grocery names in Canada. Neither Sobeys nor Safeway publishes a seniors day for the whole chain. We checked both banners’ own sites, and the Scene+ help centre as well, and none of them lists a senior discount: no qualifying age, no percentage, and no set day. If a site tells you otherwise, it is not quoting either banner.

Where the famous story comes from is worth knowing, because it explains the confusion. The version repeated across the internet, a discount on the first Tuesday of the month, traces back to Safeway’s old Customer Appreciation Day. That event gave 10% off to all shoppers who met a minimum spend. It was open to everyone in the store, young and old alike. It was not a senior offer, and treating it as one has kept a wrong answer alive for years.

How to check your own store

1. Ask at the customer service desk whether your Sobeys or Safeway store runs any seniors day of its own.
2. Check your local store flyer for a store level event, since a local day would be posted there and nowhere else.
3. If your store does run one, ask the age, the day and the discount it offers, because the store sets all three.

Individual stores do sometimes run their own seniors days. Those days are that store’s own decision: the store chooses whether to hold one, when to hold it, and what it offers. A store can start one or stop one without any announcement from the banner, and a neighbouring store under the same sign may do something different or nothing at all. That is the whole picture, and it is why this directory will not print an age or a percentage for either name.

Practical tip: if your store runs its own day, learn its details once and note them with the store’s name attached. The facts belong to that store only, and they are worth having straight before you plan a large shop around them.
