City Transit: Senior Fares
Senior fares on three systems: the TTC, GO Transit, and TransLink. Each system sets its own fares, its own card rules, and its own payment traps.
There is no single Canadian senior transit fare. Each system sets its own age, its own prices and its own way of paying, so this entry covers the three systems readers ask about most: the TTC in Toronto, GO Transit, and TransLink in Metro Vancouver. All three start their senior fares at age 65, and everything after that point differs.
TTC, Toronto. A senior fare costs $2.30 in cash or $2.25 on PRESTO. The trap is the tap: tapping a bank card to pay charges the adult fare of $3.30, with no senior discount at all. Senior Monthly and 12 Month Passes were discontinued on August 31, 2026, when monthly fare capping began. Under capping, 47 eligible fares in a calendar month are charged, and rides after that are free. Cash fares and PRESTO Tickets do not count toward capping, so the cap rewards riders who pay by PRESTO card.
GO Transit. Riders aged 65 and older save 55% off the GO fare with a PRESTO card. That is the deepest percentage saving on this page, and it applies across the GO train and bus network, as long as the senior concession is the one doing the paying.
TransLink, Metro Vancouver. At 65, riders pay concession fares: $2.30 for 1 zone, $3.40 for 2 zones and $4.60 for 3 zones. A Concession Monthly Pass costs $66.95 for all zones, and a Concession DayPass costs $9.75. Photo ID proving age is required. The same tap trap applies here: tapping a bank card charges the adult fare, so a Compass Card is needed to receive the concession fare.
How to claim it
- Before you travel, check your own system’s fare page for its senior fare, its age rule, and the card it requires.
- Take photo ID to a service point and ask for the senior concession to be set on your card, where your system requires that step.
- Pay with the card that carries your concession rather than a bank card tap, and check the fare charged on your first few trips.
Practical tip: set up the concession on a calm day, before a trip when you are in a rush. One visit with your ID can turn every later trip into a saving, with no need to ask again each time you travel.
